The poor special effects in some scenes can be excused by the low budget. It’s estimated that “Jaws” cost less than eight million dollars to produce.
There are a couple of scenes in the movie where members of the crew make appearances. The worst are some of the underwater scenes. Safety divers and equipment can be seen outside the shark cage, and reflections of breathing apparatus are visible in the bars.
A large reflector screen and camera are visible at the back of a boat when the locals head out to hunt the killer shark. “Jaws” was shot on a very tight schedule, but mistakes like this should have been spotted at the time. There were rumors some of the cast and crew didn’t believe “Jaws” would ever make it to the movie screens, and this may explain some of the basic errors.

Actors Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss can take a lot of the credit for making “Jaws” so believable. The shark is clearly a rubber prop in many scenes, but the acting brings the threat to life. The soundtrack by John Williams also added to the sense of menace.
