8. The Wild Blue Yonder (Werner Herzog, 2005)

This unique film combines Brad Dourif, images from NASA and photography under the Antarctic to show what happens when aliens try to bring Earth back from being sucked dry by human activity.

It’s a unique and idiosyncratic movie with a slower pace than most Hollywood entertainment, but it’s also a hauntingly beautiful one.

Werner Herzog has had an interesting career directing both feature film documentaries and narrative fiction.

He also occasionally acts himself. He most notably stepped in front of the camera for Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie in “Jack Reacher,” playing the villain to Cruise’s main character. While a movie about aliens coming to Earth isn’t a bit strange, the concept is interesting. Aliens are trying to save us from destroying our own planet, probably not a bad tactic.

Herzog has gone on to direct a number of documentaries with similar themes found in “The Wild Blue Yonder”. He has also produced a recent series on death row inmates from 2012-2013 titled, “On Death Row”.
