Back in 1979, directed by George Miller made one of the first dystopian action post-apocalyptic movies of this sort with only $400,000, and not only did he managed to make $100 million worldwide, the movie soon reached a cult status.

“Mad Max” was produced by Byron Kennedy and stared Mel Gibson when he was still relatively unknown. James McCausland and Miller wrote the screenplay from a story by Miller and Kennedy.

This blockbuster actually ended up flopping the American box office, but it kicked some serious ass worldwide and ended up reaching a total gross of $100 million.
