The popularity of the story of the Titanic means there are thousands of people who know every detail about the ship and what happened to it.
In one scene a hymn is sung with verses that weren’t written until some seventy years after the sinking of the Titanic. Lights and other technology on the ship in the movie hadn’t been invented at the time.
Getting every detail right is an enormous challenge on a movie like “Titanic,” but some mistakes can’t be excused. In a scene where Jack and Rose run through the dining room a camera and crewman are clearly visible.
Use of computer graphics to create the liner led to further errors. The layout of the deck and levels is wrong in one scene.
“Titanic” was a critical and financial success. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were already popular with critics, but “Titanic” helped to further their acting careers.

Director James Cameron partly funded “Titanic” and its success was key to development of the movie “Avatar.” These two movies have grossed over two billion dollars between them.
A 3D re-release of “Titanic” in 2012 was also a commercial success.
