For whatever reason, though, the box office didn’t respond well to this film, which lost $88.3 million.
Even though many of the people who saw it liked it, the box office didn’t reflect any initial interest.
The premise of the film is that Evan, played by Steve Carell, has a problem. He’s a community figure and politician, but he keeps growing a long beard and ending up in Biblical era clothing no matter how often he shaves or what he puts on in the morning.
As his transformation continues to cause issues in his professional and personal life, God, played by Morgan Freeman, encourages him to follow instructions or these intrusions will keep happening.
God wants Evan to build an ark. Finally, Evan concedes even though there is much pushback from his family, neighbors, professional colleagues, and the media. Finally his family has a change of heart, urged by God, and starts helping him.
As it turns out the corrupt individual leading the media attacks against Evan knowingly gave the go-ahead for a dam to be built, even though there was great damage to the community. The dam burst and when people ran aboard the ark they realized that Evan was right and the opposing politician, played by John Goodman, was corrupt.
It was a fun, feel-good movie that many loved, but unfortunately it left the producers praying for a financial miracle.
