20. Supernova (2000)

The film “Supernova” was released in 2000, but it was originally developed in 1988.

The movie features a strong cast including James Spader, who would go on to “The Blacklist” fame, and Angela Bassett.

The plot involves a crew being sent to investigate a crash in space and rescue those who are still alive.

However, Spader and Bassett realize that something isn’t right within a short time after their arrival. A man, who seems disturbed, is soon the only survivor of the crash and he brings “Ninth Dimensional Matter” aboard the rescue ship.

Soon people start dying and only Bassett, Spader, and the disturbed man are alive. It turns out that the man is an ex-lover of Bassett who had been abusive towards her. The matter he found had changed his appearance to be younger, preventing her from recognizing him, and they soon suspect he caused the crash and called for help intentionally to draw her there. After a struggle Basset and Spader defeat the man and return to Earth.

While the film was quite interesting and fans of the movie still support it, the reason for this box office flop might have been an issue of timing rather than quality.

In 1997 the film “Event Horizon” was released, and just the year before “Supernova” came out “Alien Cargo” hit theaters. Since both films were similar in content to “Supernova”, it’s possible that audiences were simply burnt out on the idea of space rescue action films.
