21. Hugo (2011)

Most films that flop at the box office can attribute part of their failure to harsh critics.

But in the case of the 2011 film “Hugo” it’s hard to tell where exactly the failure came from.

Not only was the film highly anticipated, particularly by fans of the book on which it was based, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret”, but it was critically acclaimed.

Martin Scorcese, a name nearly synonymous with “smash hit” in the movie industry, directed and co-produced the film, and Johnny Depp’s production company Infinitum Nihil was on-board, as well. But the mystery doesn’t stop there.

The film, which is about a 12-year old boy who follows his late father’s notes to create a machine that brings back the works of an elderly filmmaker, was not only adored by fans but won five Academy Awards and three Golden Globe nominations.

Some people blame the steep cost of producing the film for its $77 million loss at the box office, given that the film was shot in 3D and took a lot of special effects to accomplish. But regardless of the box office flop, most still consider this a heartwarming story of passion, friendship, and family.
