It seems sometimes that all you have to do to make a box office hit is have Disney produce it.
Unfortunately, though, “John Carter”, the 2012 film based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ book “A Princess of Mars”, was the exception to that rule.
Andrew Stanton, director of such films as “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E”, directed the film and also marked his co-writing debut.
Audiences seemed to enjoy the film, and even the critics weren’t as harsh to “John Carter” as they had been to many other films on this list. The movie was not criticized by audience members on its quality. However, the very complex and often confusing plot line of John Carter had many audience members disillusioned and disengaged rather quickly.
While Disney usually offers the audience films that are easy to follow, fun to watch, and full of great character, “John Carter” left many scratching their heads. The people who seemed to really enjoy the film were those who had read the book on which it was based and already made up a core fan base.
However, since most people found “John Carter” hard to explain let alone follow the movie its complexity has been blamed for its $108 million loss.
