12. Jessica Lucas: Evil Dead (2013)

And we’re back to “Evil Dead”. What is about Raimi films and actor torture? It’s almost like there might be some consequences to making films about murderous demons. Go figure.

Anyway, the 2013 remake of the schlock horror cult classic involved little to no CGI.

Director Fede Alvarez wanted a gritty feel to the film, and he researched stage magic and illusionism extensively to achieve the desired effect.

The resulting film is undeniably effective. You really feel the terror these characters bring to the screen. That’s partially due to the fact that the actors were anxiety-riddled emotional wrecks during the filming process, which rivals even the original in terms of sheer horror excess.

There’s a scene in the film where a possessed Jane Levy has to vomit a torrent of blood onto Jessica Lucas’s face. This was accomplished with cleverly hidden tubes attached to Levy’s head. She held the other actress down while gallons of fake blood gushed out onto Lucas at high pressure.

Lucas had no breathing apparatus and she had to appear to struggle, so there was no reliable way of telling whether she was drowning for real. Both actresses have described the scene as one of the worst experiences of their lives.
