10. Parallel Cinema and Necrorealism

Parallel Cinema and Necrorealism refers to Russian films created in an attempt to rebel against the strict Soviet regime.

Artists who made Parallel Cinema and Necrorealism films played with close-ups, strange angles, black and white, and silent productions.

These films often portrayed gay male zombies or other similar gay creatures, as well as unattractive homosexual men having sex and decapitating each other’s bodies.

As strange as it may sound, this genre represents a rebellious movement of oppressed underground artists, led by director Yvegny Yufit, who tried to fight the Soviet totalitarianism.

The most prominent Parallel Cinema and Necrorealism films include Daddy, Father Frost Is Dead, Werewolf Orderlies, and Cruel Illness of Men. The films were produced independently outside the Soviet Union and its overwhelming political propaganda.
