Luchador films are Mexican wrestling/action films starring popular masked Mexican luchadores. Luchadores are often portrayed as superheroes who fight evil, from vampires and spies to aliens.
The Luchador genre was popular in the 1960s and 1970s, and it featured some pretty popular wrestlers, such as El Santo, who was basically considered a superhero both on and off the screen.
Luchador films were low budget films, and revolved around action sequences performed by the stars themselves, no stunt doubles allowed.
One of the first luchador films was Huracán Ramírez (1952), while at least 150 luchador films were produced before the genre sank into oblivion.
Other notable pictures include Santo vs. las mujeres vampiro, and Las momias de Guanajuato.
