19. A Bad Feeling

Fans will ardently disagree about the most memorable line from the “Star Wars” franchise – favorites like “use the Force” and “I am your father” are obvious classics – but there is only one line that has been featured in every film.

In “A New Hope,” Luke tells his cohorts, “I have a very bad feeling about this” as they approach the Death Star.

This line is later repeated in slightly altered forms in all six “Star Wars” movies.

In “A New Hope,” Han also has a “bad feeling” when he and the heroes are trapped in the trash compactor. Later, Leia says the line in “The Empire Strikes Back,” as she and the others wander around the belly of the giant space slug. In “Return of the Jedi,” C-3PO and Han both utter the famous words – first in Jabba’s palace, and then later on the moon of Endor.

By the time the prequel trilogy rolled around, fans knew to expect the line. In fact, “I have a bad feeling about this” are the first words spoken by Obi-Wan Kenobi as he talks to Qui-Gon Jinn at the beginning of “The Phantom Menace.”

Anakin takes the phrase in “Attack of the Clones” in the arena at Geonosis as the giant execution beasts begin to approach. Finally, in “Revenge of the Sith,” Obi-Wan says it to Anakin as their starfighters barrel toward a closing blast door.

It’s not only the “Star Wars” movies that feature characters with “bad feelings,” however. The line can be found in a number of books, comics, video games, and even the “Star Tours” attractions at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
