Occasionally, the design limitations of sets and costumes impose uncomfortable limits on the cast of a film. Particularly in science fiction, elaborate costumes can be cumbersome, hot and heavy.

The elaborate gear used in the “Star Wars” films provided its share of these difficulties, one of which had to do with the costumes of the Storm Troopers.
These fellows were outfitted in gleaming white metal armor that looked cool from the outside, but felt like a garbage can to the wearer.

Due to the way the costumes and props are made, almost every Storm Trooper is left handed. Their weapons were designed with the magazines on the left side, and hundreds of them were made for the film. Only when shooting began was it discovered that the left-handed orientation of the weapons made them bang into the Troopers’ chest plates when they reloaded.

It was almost impossible for actors to use the weapons in a natural way, so they had to adjust and pretend to use their off hand. In shooting scenes, the predominately right handed actors had to switch their grip to their left hands to load the weapon, making them seem left handed.
