Billy-Elliot

15. Billy Elliot

This charming feel-good film has drama, comedy, and an unforgettable plot. Set in working class England during a mining strike, the film depicts a young boy coping with life without his mother.

He lives with his father, older brother, and senile grandmother. As the most sensitive member of his household, he is not always tended to with care of understanding.

In fact, his father sends him to boxing lessons, which he dreads.

One day, Billy Elliot, the young boy, ditches boxing class to attend ballet class. He finds that he is good at it and greatly enjoys it. He knows he must keep it a secret, however, because his father and brother would never tolerate a male dancer in the family.

The film is poignant in its depiction of this hardscrabble family and the issues that surround the strikers. The film also showcases how truly difficult it can be to follow one’s dreams, especially without the support of family.

Of course, finally, people come to realize that Billy has talent. As hard as it is to accept, his family must let him go or completely squash his dreams forever. This is a great film that is a must-see. Anyone who enjoys fine acting and a stellar story will enjoy this movie.
