Splash

18. Splash

As far as inane comedies go, “Splash” is hard to top for the sheer improbability of its plot.

Yet once you accept that mermaids could happen, you’ll be delighted that you invested the time to enjoy this unforgettable film starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, and the legendary John Candy.

Hanks’s character once falls off a boat as a child and is rescued by a mermaid girl. Flash to the future and Hanks is working near the shore and somehow once again finds himself overboard.

The grown man is then saved by the grown mermaid. She accompanies Hanks to shore having grown legs and the hilarity ensues as she tries to keep Hanks from finding out her secret–she’s the mermaid that has been rescuing him.

Problems arise because it’s hard to keep a mermaid secret. Eventually, the government catches wind of this unusual species. Hanks feels duped, but ultimately doesn’t want to face life without his favorite fish.

If you’ve never seen this comedic gem, it’s worth the treat. Fans will identify with Hanks as well as the mermaid who wants to experience life on land. The conclusion is utterly satisfying. The film showcases the many sides of Hanks who plays comedic roles just as well as the serious ones.
