Critically acclaimed, the film also stars Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, and Vincent Gardenia. Not only did Cher win the Oscar for Best Actress, Dukakis won for Best Supporting Actress.
In the film Cher plays a Sicilian-American widow who becomes engaged to the wrong man, Aiello’s character who is the ultimate mama’s boy. While he travels to Italy to care for his ailing mother, Cher is left home to wait and deal with the antics of her family.
While planning her wedding, Cher invites her fiancé’s estranged brother to the wedding. Their meeting is the stuff of film legend. The brother is played by Cage. While Cher appears to be ultra-sensible, Cage’s character is able to make her feel young once again. The two fall in love in spite of Cher’s desperation to end the attraction.
As love stories go, this one is completely satisfying in every respect. It’s impossible not to root for Cage and, yet, it’s enjoyable to watch Cher try to put on the brakes to no avail. Order some Italian takeout for this great film and enjoy!
