Even though you may not know this acting master, and quite possible the greatest dude who ever lived, as an actor who did mainly comedies, but when Bill’s career was at its beginning, he was just a funny guy who knew how to make everyone laugh.
Comedies like “Groundhog Day”, “Caddyshack” and “Scrooged” established Murray as the main comic star in Hollywood, however, he soon felt the need for something more serious and tangible.
Over the past decade or so, Bill has been showering us with some much darker emotions. One of his greatest and most notable roles is in a masterpiece called “Lost in Translation”, a movie written and directed by Sofia Coppola.
Bill portrays a famous but faded movie star who is visiting Japan to star in a whiskey commercial, while his marriage back in America is about to fail miserably. He then meets an unlikely companion, a young girl played by Scarlett Johansson whose marriage is also on the brink of ending.
Murray is tragically comic in this role, while his portrayal of loneliness, lack of satisfaction, but also tenderness and genuine care for this girl, is simply brilliant. Do watch this movie. If you’ve seen it already, watch it again.
