The production was a huge undertaking with a star studded cast of big name actors including Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, George Clooney, John Travolta, Woody Harrelson and John Cusack to name a few.
The original cut of the film was almost five hours in length, and required seven months of editing to get it down to 171 minutes.
Many actors who also worked on the movie had their entire parts cut out including Mickey Rourke, Billy Bob Thornton and Gary Oldman and Martin Sheen. The movie follows a company of soldiers caught up in the conflict at Guadacanal during WWII.
Despite a talented cast and huge budget, director Terrence Malick fails to develop his characters which makes it difficult for the audience to connect with them. Most of the story is told through an inner monologue that becomes overly dramatic at times even for a soldier witnessing the horrors of war.
The film also takes some artistic liberties with the actual events that transpired during the Battle of Mount Austen.
