12 Reasons Why True Detective Became Truly Defective

10. Overdeveloping The Character Of Ani

One of the few flaws the creator of the show tried to fix from the first season was the lack of nicely developed and stoic female characters.

Nic Pizzolatto accepted the criticism from the first season and decided to make amends by introducing the character of Ani Bezzerides. And then he overdid it.

Ani is a Ventura County Sheriff CID and we get to meet her as a rather strong and rebellious persona who is often at odds with the very system she serves. Unfortunately, this is where it all spirals out of control.

Rachel McAdams’ character has a pretty dark and traumatic past (she was sexually abused when she was younger), which inspired her to become a badass cop; Ani could kill you with her bare hands in less than 60 seconds; Ani is a rough drinker who picks up fights at the bar; Ani likes knives, but she is also a mother figure to her younger sister…

On paper, all this should add up to a rather awesome female character. But it doesn’t. The character of Ani feels conscripted, as if Pizzolatto was overcompensating for the rare chink in 1st season’s armor. And he probably was.
