As we mentioned earlier, their connection was instant and immaculate, so the whole first season kind of revolved around them, and Nic and Fukunaga had a strong basis to build the story around.
The 3 detectives from season 2 just failed to do so.
The connection and interaction between them were plane and unconvincing, which left the audiences disconnected from the plot as well.
Although all 3 detectives have plenty of common ground – their pasts are dark and messed up, they are all socially damaged, and all three of them are rather self-destructive – Pizzolatto somehow failed to insert those coveted engaging and mind-boggling dialogues that would pull us into that strangely warm and welcoming abyss.
