12 Reasons Why True Detective Became Truly Defective

12. The Show Has become Self-Aware

In order to wrap up this article, we are addressing perhaps the one issue all the other problems with season 2 stem from.

It appears that this show has become self-aware. Let us elaborate.

The creator of the show took its strongest elements – main characters with exceedingly dark pasts, pseudo-intellectual conversations, highly quotable lines, self-destructive nihilists with drinking problems, ghastly and dreadful murders, and gloomy atmosphere – and simply tried to enhance them and put them in the show again only for the sake of being in the show again.

We get the feeling that, after watching season 1, the new cast felt obligated to copy the unique and marvelous acting Matthey and Woody delivered, so one can simply feel their effort to act like an actor from “True Detective” should act.

This ultimately led to artificial, plastic and bitter taste of season 2 which will linger on in our mouths for quite a while. Maybe beer and scotch will wash it away. Cheers.
