12 Reasons Why True Detective Became Truly Defective

9. The Central Story Ended Up Being Far Too Complicated

Another proof that writing was all over the place this time around is the fact that the main plot line is far more tangled than it should’ve been.

“True Detective” should, in its essence, be a crime show. (With many a layer lying betwixt the main story, of course, but a crime show nonetheless.)

Much like the beloved and awesome 90’s series “Homicide: Life on the Street,” it should be compelling, intriguing and thought-provoking, but the main stories ought to be fairly easy to follow.

Nic messed up quite badly with his main murder mystery here.

The many twists and turns eventually managed to leave behind any sense of internal logic, leaving the audience baffled and confused, which in many cases caused viewers to lose interest in what would happen next.

Quite the opposite effect of what a writer should try to accomplish, wouldn’t you think?
