Now, seventeen years later, it’s hard to imagine anyone else winning that award and perhaps, his brilliant portrayal of a worn out shrink carries more weight today than it did back in 1997.
“Good Will Hunting” is simply a glorious film that seems to have aged well, and so has Williams’ touching role of Dr. Sean Maguire, a therapist who finds a bit of himself in a troubled young man with all the potential in the world which is about to be wasted.
Now, as we have already got used to the fact that he adds quite a bit of himself to his best roles, much of his memorable dialogue in this famous film was improvised, including the scene in which he talks to Will (played by Matt Damon) about his late wife.
Namely, while he was trying to convince the boy that nobody is perfect and you need to learn to love those little imperfections in your partner, and that those imperfections are in fact what you miss the most when you lose someone, Robin started improvising by saying his wife used to fart in her sleep so hard that one time she woke herself and the dog up.
Not only did Matt Damon start laughing his ass off, the cameraman also couldn’t keep his composure either and you can see the camera going up and down while he laughs. This take ended up in the movie.
