Legendary John Hurt made himself a legend a lot of years ago, when he was transformed into an almost alien looking man that is arguably his most famous role – the real life Joseph Merrick in David Lynch’s 1980 film, Elephant Man.

Hurt’s heart breaking performance, along with a lot of layers of latex and makeup, earned him an Oscar nomination.

His role was so magnificent and it impressed the Academy so much, that it actually inspired them to create Best Makeup and Visual Effects category we know today. Now, if that isn’t breathtakingly amazing, we don’t know what is.
