Space travel and intergalactic battles were popularized on the big screen in films such as the Star Wars trilogy, and on television with the Star Trek series.
In 2009, Star Trek made a glorious return to the big screen in America with the reboot film Star Trek.
Playing the iconic role of Spock was actor Zachary Quinto. A native of Pennsylvania and graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (fun fact: Matt Bomer is also a Carnegie Mellon alum), Quinto made his first television appearance on the series The Others.
Other television appearances over the years included guest star roles on CSI, Touched by an Angle, Charmed, and L.A. Dragnet, just to name a few. He gained critical acclaim for his role as Spock in the 2009 Star Trek, and reprised his role in the 2013 sequel entitled Star Trek Into Darkness. Quinto has been a long-time supporter of gay rights campaigns and organizations, but did not come out publicly until October 2011.
At the time he explained finding the motivation to do so following the suicide of a gay teenager. He believed that only by publicly acknowledging sexual orientation can complete equality be gained for all on the road ahead.
