12. The Lion King (1994)

This animated musical adventure, produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures, tells us the story of a lion cub and future king, Simba in search for his own identity, (and the fact that it ended up on this list might be due to the author’s childhood bias).

The story takes place in a kingdom of lions in Africa, and the adventure was influenced by the biblical tales of Joseph and Moses, as well as the Shakespearean play Hamlet.

Before Pixar brought animation into the 21st century with classics like “Finding Nemo”, “Up” and “The Incredibles,” this definitely was Disney’s number 1 film.

Also, it was among the last to utilize a musical soundtrack. Its songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with an original score by Hans Zimmer.

The famous Lion King soundtrack has now been transformed into a very successful Broadway musical.
