14. The Matrix (1999)

This 1999 American-Australian science fiction action film tells the tale of a dystopian future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality called “the Matrix”, created by sentient machines to subdue the human population, while their bodies’ heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source.

The movie magnificently depicted the sense of detachment from reality that came with internet access, and set many a new trend in storytelling, cinematography and sci-fi in general.

“The Matrix” is perhaps best known for popularizing a visual effect called ‘bullet time’, in which the heightened perception of certain characters is represented by allowing the action within a shot to progress in slow-motion while the camera’s viewpoint appears to move through the scene at normal speed.

The film is a perfect example of the post-industrial cyberpunk genre, alongside its predecessors “Blade Runner”, “12 Monkeys”, “The Terminator”, “Johnny Mnemonic”, and William Gibson’s beautifully crafted novel from 1984, “Neuromancer.”
