It is common knowledge that an “X” rating usually meant a downward spiral and a quick death sentence for a movie, but “Midnight Cowboy” was apparently so groundbreaking that it managed to overcome that barrier and push the envelope by remaining the only X-rated movie to receive an Oscar for Best Picture.
The movie drew that precious line between pornography and art, emphasizing the fact that we don’t have to dismiss a movie’s artistic value due to its adult content.
