9. Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)

This 1985 mystery adventure film, based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was the first to feature a hyper-realistic CGI character that had to be both scanned and painted onto the film.

For a modern viewer, the famous scene where Sherlock Holmes is battling a glass figure that comes alive out of a stained glass illustration, may seem relatively simple, but it was the first time this technology was used.

It was groundbreaking in a sense that it showed CGI technology wasn’t only useful for simply adding to the SFX spectacle, but also for creating whole new characters entirely.

Remember Gollum from the “Lord of the Rings” series? Well, now you know how precious this movie is for the film industry.
