9. Mickey Rooney – Breakfast At Tiffany’s

This timeless classic (the movie, not Mickey Rooney) sounds like it could never have anything negative attached to it, doesn’t it?

And then you remember Rooney’s yellow-face for his role as Mr. Yunioshi in 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

How in the world does that sound like a better idea instead of casting someone of actual Asian heritage?

But hey, why would you do that when you can just hire Rooney to go completely overboard with portraying a caricature of a Japanese man.

He also wore makeup and a prosthetic mouthpiece to make him appear Asian. The only thing that appeared was a vein on the world’s forehead, but some 30 years later when people started actually using their brain.

Richard Shepherd, the movie’s producer, repeatedly apologized for Rooney’s insensitive portrayal, while Rooney himself said that he wouldn’t have taken the role if he knew how offended people would be. And thus, a legacy was forever tarnished. What a shame.
