A lot of wacky and wild creatures exist in Middle Earth, but conventional wisdom says that cars shouldn’t be one of them.
When Sam and Frodo leave the Shire for the first time, eagle-eyed viewers may notice dust being kicked up far in the background of the shot.
The dust was caused by a production vehicle that was traveling down a dirt road at the time. People didn’t see it until it was too late. The dust was then digitally removed for the DVD release which led to outcry from fans who wished to point out the mistake to their friends.
An airplane also makes an appearance in the opening scenes where Gandalf is riding in his cart alongside Frodo. As the camera pans over the Shire a set of blinking lights can clearly be spotted in the sky. The scene where Ian McKellen bangs his head on the ceiling of Bilbo Baggins’ home was not actually in the script but was included after McKellen managed to act through the pain convincingly.
