Directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer must have decided that too much of a bad thing is wonderful, because they crammed this movie with so many unfunny references that you have mistaken the script for a middle school project.
Mel Brooks proved throughout his career that a well-crafted spoof movie could have as much staying power as the films it lampooned.
But Friedberg and Seltzer missed out on several key elements that Brooks had mastered, such as a singular focus, comedic timing, and competent script writing. The result was yet another offering of pure drivel that disappointed critics and movie goers alike.
Tedious references to the “Harry Potter” series and “The Chronicles of Narnia” produced flat gags that left theater goers checking their cell phones and hoping for an emergency call. Inexplicably, the film also took on such gems as “Borat” and “Nacho Libre,” making “Epic Movie” as confusing as it was boring.
Despite almost universally negative reviews, the movie grossed more than four times its $20 million budget in theaters, proving once again that the movie going public can be duped into sitting through yet another senseless romp through tepid humor with a little clever advertising.
