The movie seemed primed for success with sky-high interest in Affleck and Lopez’s real life love affair.
The sensationalism of the couple’s romance, though, couldn’t propel the film to success.
The film’s contrived plot, which includes Affleck’s portrayal as a sensitive mobster and Lopez’s role as a lesbian, led to a tortured story that few moviegoers could identify with.
Unfortunately, the progression of the plot didn’t serve to enamor viewers any more than the film’s basic premise. Gigli kidnaps the brother of a federal prosecutor under the ruse of taking the mentally challenged brother to “the Baywatch.” Instead of killing the brother, Gigli visits a morgue and cuts off a cadaver’s thumb, sending it to his mob boss as “proof” that he has completed his assignment.
After a convoluted series of events, the brother is left on a beach and the main characters decide to leave town in a decidedly flat final scene. Although a few critics generously overlooked the film’s flaws, “Gigli” is frequently cited as one of the worst movies ever and went on to gross only $4 million against a $75 million budget.
