It was the first NC-17 rated movie to be released into the mainstream in the United States.
United Artists even used an army of staffers to prevent underage moviegoers from sneaking in to see the movie, which further added to the film’s intrigue.
Unfortunately, poor production and the film’s rating served to secure the film’s demise. Even copious amounts of nudity couldn’t save this bomb from bad reviews and audience scorn. The movie is the highest grossing NC-17 movie ever with $20 million in gross receipts, but it was widely panned by critics and audiences.
Because its box office revenues fell far short of the movie’s $45 million production budget, “Showgirls” was deemed a cinematic failure. Fortunately, though, bad films sometimes survive poor box office performance.
Since its release on home video, “Showgirls” has earned another $108 million in the United States. It has become a cult classic among fans of B-movie cheesiness. The movie also spawned a sequel, entitled “Penny’s from Heaven,” as well as an off-Broadway musical loosely based on the plot of the original movie.
