Anyone who has ever seen “Weird Science” or “The Goonies” knows that this decade represented one of the most bizarre eras in movie history.
“Howard the Duck,” though, proved to be a bomb even by 80s standards. It is also one of a handful of examples of a comic book that should have remained a comic book.
This George Lucas-produced film about an alien duck who is stranded on Earth was poorly received by both audiences and critics, who were turned off by the stilted acting, awkward special effects, and weird storyline. Many critics noted that the film, which was an adaptation of the comic series of the same name, would have fared better as an animated film.
The poor design of Howard’s costume, which severely limited the actor’s movements, was cited as one of the movie’s main shortfalls. Adding to this problem, several versions of Howard made for different scenes were constructed with conflicting features and proportions.
Even worse, the voice of Howard was synchronized with the duck’s movements after filming was completed. Overall, the movie came off as creepy rather than cute. Especially creepy – Lea Thompson’s “love scene” with an alien waterfowl.
