And classic characters like Frankenstein and Dracula, along with the ever popular Hugh Jackman, were also a big draw for those who expected this to be the movie of the decade.
Unfortunately, the film failed to capture any of the magic and outright creepiness its directors envisioned.
There was an obvious callback to the monster movies of the 1930s and 1940s, an era when low-budget effects and campy imagery could still give you a good scare. The effects-laden “Van Helsing,” though, was more laughable than disturbing.
Despite grossing $300 million at the box office, the movie managed to garner mostly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike.
For many, the core problem was that “Van Helsing” offered no discernable plot. If endless effects are your thing, by all means, jump right in. If you’re looking for a storyline, though, you’ll finish the movie feeling as empty as Frankenstein’s soul.
