Many of us even eagerly awaited the next Saturday morning installment of the “Transformers” cartoon series, turning our own plastic planes, cars, and pistols into menacing lords of robotic destruction while we waited.
When the original “Transformers” movie surfaced, most of us knew it wasn’t going to be a cinematic masterpiece.
We didn’t expect a plot – just giant robots kicking metal booty and destroying things in the process. And we pretty much got what we came to see.
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” proved to be too much of an okay thing. Tap into our nostalgia by flaunting tons of CGI and special effects once, and that’s fine. But this second helping left even diehard fans wishing they could transform their theater seats into Serta Perfect Sleepers. A plot? Of course not! At least not one that you could possibly follow between explosions and metallic stomping.
Director Michael Bay and the tech crew amped up the special effects in an effort to make the robots appear more “realistic.” What they achieved, though, was a mish-mash of metal parts that made the characters almost impossible to tell apart. And when you take away great visuals, well… there’s not much more than meets the eye.
