10 Comedies That Just Weren’t Comedic

1. Gigli (2003)

It may have been the straw that made Ben and J-Lo decide it wasn’t working out.

One of two dismally received films they did, Gigli stands out for its performances (bad), jokes (bad and offensive) and the lack of chemistry between two people that supposedly were really in love.

2. Say It Isn’t So (2001)

Usually the Farrelly brothers can walk that line between humor and gross. Not here. The likeable Heather Graham and Chris Klein play a couple that may be siblings.

It’s a sitcom premise stretched across a feature that has no choice but to flesh out the script with dubious material.

3. The Hottie & The Nottie (2008)

Usually to make a female ugly, movies slap some glasses and a bun on a woman. This one decided to go with bad teeth, ugly scars and silly hats.

It’s an unpleasant movie without a single redeeming quality. There’s a scene where Paris Hilton jogs in slow motion. And she’s awful.

4. Freddy Got Fingered (2001)

We struggled. Who deserved to be here more: Tom Green or Pauly Shore? We went with Tom, a guy who could make the frat boys laugh on MTV but couldn’t cut the mustard with a mainstream audience.

The “comedy” in this one makes you squirm.

5. All About Steve (2009)

Sandra Bullock stalking Bradley Cooper does not a comedy make. It tried for screwball comedy and ended up disastrous mishap.

Bullock acknowledged the awfulness of this in a year when she was getting quite a few accolades for other work.

6. Fred: The Movie (2010)

Sometimes Hollywood scrambles desperately for the next big thing. They found this one on YouTube and rushed the extremely popular web character onto the screen.

Nickelodeon made the same mistake with a television show for the same character.

7. Son of the Mask (2005)

This movie failed the second the studio convinced themselves they could replace the irascible Jim Carrey with … Jamie Kennedy?

Sure, in the comics different people wore the mask, but shouldn’t they cast a talent that drew audiences? Going low rent killed a lucrative franchise.

8. Howard the Duck (1986)

People still don’t know this was supposed to be a comedy. The original comic book material was dark satire. This was simply odd and dull. Coming from George Lucas, you’d think the effects would’ve been better.

9. Sex and the City 2 (2010)

Audiences and critics loved the first movie. Not so much the sequel. They’ve given a lot of reasons: too long, no narrative drive, etc.

We believe the biggest misstep they made was taking out the “city.” The second the foursome left New York to ride camels, they lost the audience.

10. Jack & Jill (2011)

You know you’re looking at a questionable comedy when the trailer doesn’t make you laugh. Adam Sandler has managed to chug out the same kind of movie for over two decades. And this time he shamelessly drags icon Al Pacino into it.
