Even though everyone loves taboos, they’re not the only thing worth breaking. The latest ‘almost pornographic’ book-to-film adaptation “Fifty Shades of Grey” has been all the rage in the past few weeks, and now we learn that it has actually broken quite a few records already.
As The Hollywood Reporter suggests, the movie’s director Sam Taylor-Johnson achieved the highest-grossing debut week for a film directed by a woman. This isn’t strange at all, since the female presence in the higher levels of filmmaking is a lot weaker than its counterpart.
This means it’s about to stomp all over the record’s previous owner, the “Twilight” franchise, which made only $69.9 million in November 2008.
If we were to find out how was “Fifty Shades of Grey” able to crush the famous vampire-werewolf-girl movie, the most obvious reason would probably be the focus group.
“Twilight” is also a book brought to the big screen, but the main difference is the amount of controversy included in the movies. While the teen romance franchise has almost no explicit scenes in any of the movies, “Fifty Shades of Grey” made sure it included as much as possible.
And that’s why the E. L. James book about sex, fantasy, and controversy has been made into such a successful movie. We’ll let you decide whether it’s good or bad, but one thing’s for sure – the numbers don’t lie.
