Box Office Weekend: Chappie Barely At The Top

Even though the box office cannot measure how good a movie is, it’s still a place where films either rise or fall. And this weekend, the sci-fi flick “Chappie” somehow managed to do neither, and both.

“Chappie” was welcomed with mostly negative criticism, most likely due to the movie focusing on unimportant character rather than on Chappie, an artificial intelligence robot trying to understand life and people.

Nonetheless, the movie still made $13 million this weekend. Compared to its $50 million budget, the last couple of days weren’t too good to “Chappie.”

The movie’s director Neill Blomkamp spent $30 on his directorial debut “District 9” and a stunning $115 million on “Elysium,” so we can’t be sure whether this outcome is good or bad.

On the other hand, we have a clear loser. “Unfinished Business” finished in 10th place this weekend after making only $4 million. We expected more from $35 million comedy flick, but it seems that the Vince Vaughn curse has struck again.

Last, but not least, is the “American Sniper.” Even though this war movie made only $1 million in 2015, it passed the $337 million mark since it was released, which makes the highest grossing movie of 2014. The title previously belonged to “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.”
