Gary Oldman was always that one actor everyone remembers when they think of weird movies, but this time his movie went so far beyond weird that it got banned.

As Deadline reports, “Child 44” starring Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy got smashed by a banhammer in Russia just days before hitting the theaters.

And the reason behind this, as Russia’s Ministry of Culture claims, lies in the movie’s attempt to re-imagine historical events.

In an announcement, Russia’s Ministry of Culture disclosed that “Child 44” included “a distortion of historic facts and willful interpretation of events, as well as images and characters of the Soviet citizens of the period.”

To avoid spoilers, we’ll only say that “Child 44” follows the story of a disgraced secret police agent, who tries to apprehend a pedophilic serial killer in Stalin-era Russia.

We can’t really imagine what a movie that features talents like Oldman and Hardy can show in order to insult someone, but we’re sure Russian officials had their reasons for their decision.

The movie’s distributor in Russia, The Central Film Partnership already appealed to lift the ban, but the issue is yet to be resolved. We’ll keep our readers updated on the situation.
