Anne Hathaway’s Godzilla Problem

The ‘Kaiju’ game is back on – with the 2014 “Godzilla,” the world was reminded of the wonders and awesomeness of giant monster movie genre. We can even pin the making of “Pacific Rim 2” to the good, old ‘Godzy’.

Maybe it was the hype, or maybe it was intention that pushed Anne Hathaway into the “Colossal” project. Unfortunately for her and all of her fans, the same project is now causing legal issues for the actress.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Voltage Pictures, which plans to star Anne Hathaway as a woman whose mind is connected to a giant monster, is now involved in a legal dispute with Toho, the studio that owns the rights to Godzilla.

The problem lies in the similarity between the monster from “Colossal” and Toho’s famous character. The studio’s complaint claims that the both the Voltage Pictures movie and the team behind it “are brazenly producing, advertising, and selling an unauthorized Godzilla film of their own.”

Then it continues: “The Director’s Notes also make that Defendants have not only taken the Godzilla Character as their own, but that they also intend to use the Godzilla Character in precisely the same way that Toho used the character in its initial film – attacking Tokyo.”

We can see what Toho’s trying to point out, and by the looks of it, they’re right. It might be a shame that “Colossal” isn’t going to happen no matter how good its idea is, but at least we can look forward to the 2018 “Godzilla 2.”
