10. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill, 1969)

This film is undoubtedly one of America’s many underrated Western films.

The script for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was written by William Goldman, who would win an Academy Award for the Best Original Screenplay for this film.

The movie stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the title roles of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, respectively.

The film is based loosely upon the story of a real-life pair of Wild West outlaws, Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy) and Harry Longabaugh (the Sundance Kid).

It is set in Wyoming in the late 1890s. Butch is the leader of the Hole in the Wall Gang. Butch is portrayed as a bit of a goofball in the film, but he always has the support of the sharp shooting Sundance Kid in his schemes.

The gang has become notorious in the American West for robbing bank trains moving cash across the country. The banks band together and hire a team of professional lawmen to hunt down the members of the gang.

The film follows Butch and Sundance as they escape through the wide open spaces of Wyoming with the lawmen hot on their trail. Eventually the duo escapes the US for Bolivia, only to be surrounded by the Bolivian Army at the film’s conclusion.
