15. The Man in the Moon (Robert Mulligan, 1991)
Long before she would star in the “Legally Blonde” films and go on to greater success in the future, Witherspoon was cast in the lead role as Dani Trant in “The Man in the Moon.”
The film’s story is set during the summer of 1957 in Louisiana. Dani is a 14-year-old girl struggling with new emotions and feelings as she enters her teenage years.
Dani is the middle child in a family that has three daughters, with another on the way. Dani has an older sister who helps care for the girls’ younger sister.
As the middle child, Dani tries to cope with feelings of love, attraction, heartbreak and betrayal. One day while swimming in a local pond, she encounters a neighbor boy. The rough first encounter between the two leaves Dani with a strong dislike for the boy, but when his family comes to her home for dinner, she realizes there is something more there.

The film’s story follows the complicated relationship that develops between Dani, the neighbor boy, and her older sister. By the end of the film, the girls have been forced to confront the situation. As the film comes to a conclusion, the girls are seen sitting on the front porch (with the moon high above) having an inaudible conversation that leaves viewers with the impression that they are mending the rift between them.
