6. Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “Psycho” has been hailed as one of the best movies of all time, so no one understands why Gus Van Sant would try to rival it with his 1998 remake.

The original “Psycho” starred Anthony Perkins as the creepy Norman Bates, Janet Leigh as the ill-fated Marion Crane, and Vera Miles and John Gavin as the pair of amateur sleuths who find themselves investigating a strange hotel in the middle of nowhere.

The low-budget film was something of a departure from Hitchcock’s other thrillers, and it originally wasn’t met with universal critical acclaim. Today, however, it’s viewed as the auteur’s best work and was selected for preservation by the US Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 1992.

The 1998 version stars Vince Vaughn, Julianne Moore, and Anne Heche. Though it was almost a shot-for-shot remake (in spite of being filmed in color and being set in the modern day), this version of “Psycho” was viewed as more of an experiment than an actual remake.

It got negative notices for its lack of creativity and was even called an insult to the original film. The remake was awarded two Razzie Awards in 1999 – one for Worst Remake or Sequel and the other for Worst Director.
