Casablanca

7. Casablanca

“You despise me, don’t you?” “If I gave you any thought, I probably would.” Simply put, a timeless classic. “Casablanca” is the iconic tale of love and sacrifice.

Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman lead a talented cast in what is widely considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time.

The film was adapted from a play that was never put into production. Bogart plays Rick Blaine, an American business man who owns a nightclub and casino in Casablanca.

Rick finds himself in possession of a set of priceless letters that would afford the bearer free passage through Europe which was currently under the control of Germany. His former girlfriend shows up at his club with her husband asking for help in order to get her fugitive husband to safety.

The onscreen chemistry between Bogart and Bergman aroused the suspicions of Bogart’s wife Mayo Methot who would often visit the set to accuse Bogart of infidelity. He would then show up to work in a foul mood. The film took home three Academy Awards and frequently tops the greatest movies of all time lists.

Many of the catchphrases still survive in popular culture such as “Play it again, Sam” and “Here’s looking at you kid.”
