Famed Avengers actor Patrick Macnee died at the beautiful age of 93, and left the entertainment industry in grief. The man who immortalized John Steed in The Avengers TV series during the 60’s and 70’s is survived by his children and one grandson.
Macnee, who marvelously personified the term “British gent,” was born in London and he went to school with the recently passed Sir Christopher Lee. The legendary actor went to Eton, and had no trouble of being the best in his class until he got booted out for selling pornography to his peers, and for acting as a bookie. After being kicked out of the prestige college, Macnee enlisted in the Royal Navy.
When he finished his military service, Macnee decided it was time to pursue his acting dreams and see whether he has any skills and talents in that field of performing arts. He mostly worked on London’s theatre stages, until a friend offered him a job in Canada. Macnee had unaccredited, small roles in huge blockbusters like 1938’s Pygmalion (in which he had his debut), rLaurence Olivie’s Hamlet, A Christmas Carol, The Howling, This is Spinal Tap, Les Girls, King Solomon’s Treasure, A View To Kill, Masque Of The Red Death, and The Avengers (1998 version).
Macnee never really bothered the fact that he wasn’t a huge movie star since he realized that his money maker and passion was in television. His most iconic character was The Avenger’s John Steed (hat and umbrella included), a charming and mysterious gentlemen who didn’t care for guns but always won a fight. Apart from the TV adaptation of the famed comics, Macnee also worked on shows like Columbo, The Love Boat, Battlestar Galactica, Frasier, and Hart To Hart.
