Last time we saw them in “The Smurfs 2,” where animation came together with live-action footage to bring joy to children and adults alike.
But the latest reports from Sony Pictures Animation suggest that “The Smurfs” franchise is about to get rebooted, only this time it’s completely going to commit to animation.
The Hollywood Reporter informs us that the reboot will be directed by Kelly Asbury, while Papa Smurf is probably going to be voiced by Mandy Patinkin, instead of the original Jonathan Winters. Asbury previously worked on classics like “Toy Story” and “The Little Mermaid,” which puts him at the very top of animation directors in the business.
This news about rebooting “The Smurfs” isn’t really much of a surprise. “The Smurfs” and “The Smurfs 2” earned a combined sum of $910 million worldwide, with the first installment bringing more than 60% of the money to the sum.
So it’s no wonder that Sony wants to start over from the first movie. Seeing a $200 million drop certainly isn’t pleasant, which makes a reboot the only logical solution for Sony to start earning some paper from the franchise again.
