5. Cleopatra (1963)

One of the main reasons why Cleopatra made it to our list despite being more than 50 years old is the fact that it is one of the most expensive films ever created.

The 1963 picture featuring Elisabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and Richard Burton as Mark Anthony cost a whopping $44 million, which was quite a hefty sum for the 1960s.

Needless to say, it flopped at the box office, bringing home “only” $26 million, another mind-blowing figure for its time.

Despite being widely popular, this film disappointed its creators, but it did serve to dress Elisabeth Taylor up many times. The role of Cleopatra required 65 costume changes and although the film slightly tweaked historical facts to its liking it is still a picture with one of the most epic grandeurs in Hollywood.
