The Wizard of Oz, a classic film that had withstood the test of time, disappointed at the box office when it was released in 1939.
Made with a huge budget of 2.7 million, The Wizard of Oz banked only $3 million, practically just enough to break even. MGM had high hopes for the film, which used the latest special effects available in the industry.
When we count in distribution and production costs the studio had for the movie, it ended up losing $1.1 million, which in mid-20th century was a fortune.
Although it may be hard to believe that The Wizard of Oz was a flop when it first came out it was actually various re-releases and TV broadcasts that helped the movie reach the status of a classic it has today.
